Recently, I set two goals to meet before summer arrived. One, finish writing my third book. Two, get back in shape from the holidays!
Yesterday, I wanted to throw the laptop through the window, trash all my notes, and watch TV. Then, at the gym, I tried to quit on the last squat. My trainer yelled, "Don't you dare, get up - hold it - one more, you can do it!"
The truth is, I was tired, frustrated, and ready to give up on my goals.
Then I remembered this story and went one squat past splat!
A man meets a teacher in the road and asks, "Which way is success?" The old man says nothing but points to a place off in the distance. Excited about the opportunity for quick and easy success the man runs off in the direction the teacher points. Suddenly, there comes a loud "SPLAT." The man is torn, bruised, and stunned. He limps back to the teacher. He asks again, "Which way is success?" The teacher again points silently in the same direction. The man obediently walks off once more. This time the splat is deafening, and when the man crawls back, he is bloody, broken, and irate. "I asked you which way is success," he screams at the teacher. "I followed your directions and all I got was splatted! No more of this pointing! Talk!" The old man spoke, and what he says is this: "Success is that way. Just a little past splat."
What I have learned:
- Many times our life's desires are directly in front of us. Unfortunetly, we turn back, give in or give up just before our blessing arrives.
- Success is not measured in where you happen to land in life. Success is measured by the challenges, obstacles and opportunities you overcame on your journey.
- A strong body, a successful career, a loving relationship. It's always in that direction... just a little past splat!
- Today is your day! Get up, get out and get going. It is never too late to march in the direction of your dreams! You can do it!!!!
Get past your splat!
