In elementary school I was often teased for looking like a boy. I was tall, skinny, short hair and flat chested! I entered Jr. High with thick glasses and a fragile self-esteem. And when I was 18 years old a young man from a nearby high school looked at me and said, “I’m not going out with you. You’re ugly.” A lie I believed for twenty years. Luckily....Read More
I stretched out across the bed for a much needed power nap. I quickly drifted into REM mode (rapid eye movement). I had no more dozed into the abyss of total relaxation when I was suddenly jerked straight out of the bed. I jumped to my feet grabbing my nose when I yelled out loud , "OMG! A Gnat just flew up my nose!"Read More
Like two little girls, my sister and I walked around the acreage and slowly made our way over to the pond. We stepped onto the wooden deck and gazed across the water. I took a deep breath. A sense of peace finally came over me and my sister began to pray. As I reluctantly strolled back to the main house she looked at me and matter of factly stated, "You're a rhino!" My first instinct was to look down at my thighs and take offense! But I started laughing out loud and said, "I know, Right?!"
But, I knew exactly what she meant.
Yes, I reluctantly admit that I was one of those mothers that locked her children outside to play. But I always followed up with, "Remember that Momma loves you and this is for your own good!" Besides, I made the choice to raise my children in the country and I figured if I was paying for the land they were going to use it.
However, Avry, my third child, hated the outdoors.Read More

I admit it! I am deathly afraid of heights. However, I was told the Gondola ride at Lake Tahoe wasn't that bad. As a motivational speaker I could not encourage others to overcome their fears if I was not willing. So I climbed into the lift and proceeded up the mountain.
Immediately, I regretted my decision.Read More
Many years ago, when my children were very young, family came to visit for the weekend. The kitchen was a mess and the laundry was piled high. The kids and I were gathered around the dining room table rolling out play-doh, eating miniature cookies, and sipping kool-aid from dainty dishes. We were having a tea party!Read More
Nearly three years ago, my daughter Avry was experiencing a very dark moment in her life. In the light of grief, she discovered herself looking at her life from a different perspective. One afternoon, I received the following email:
"Mom, I've spent my entire life 'climbing this mountain'. Today, I realized I climbed the wrong mountain and I don't know what to do."
As my 24-year-old son wept in my arms this morning, I was over taken by the love he had for a young man that made a difference in his life. Jesus was born in a barn, Anne Frank wrote her diary while in hiding, and Princess Diana was a school teacher. In spite of their tragic deaths they made a difference in the lives of the those around them.Read More
